To build a mage you need some basic skills that are shared by all mages, to start with.

Meditation
Life
Evocation
Incantation
Enchantment
Etc.

Sometimes you can eliminate one of the skills, for example. A fire/water mage doesn't really need that much incantation, if any.

All mages will need to train meditation, once you guild as a ArchMage, it would be good to train 5, giving a total of 15 med. You can train more if you want, it's always good. But 15 is decent enough.

Life is also an important skills. You will need it to make your resist last longer. There are skills that make the mana use for resist less, enchantment. But I wouldn't go crazy with that unless your a fire/death mage.

After that you will need some attacking elements. Most mages train fire and water, Bullfrogz went with Mind, and I myself went Fire and Death. Depending on what mage you are, I.E. Resist, attack, Etc. You will train according. For attack, train as much possible.

There are various items, and other skills you will need. But I believe to make a really good mage you need to do some experimenting on your own...

There are a lot of skills a mage can train, being for fighting, support, enchanting...Whatever.

Too add on to salkand.

If your halfing or human, which I"m gussing you are, You can easily get 2 major elements. I reccomend just going water/fire (I hate to say it) then once you have enough skill and experience with using a mage, and their builds, you can make a unique skill set, Like I did. If your pixie, its very simple to pull off 25 of each element, with the right equipment.

Okay at 25 you want at LEAST, 4 med trained, that would give you a 15 mana rejeneration everytime at top of hte guild. You can train 9 at a higher level.

If your using ball spells, which I'm gussing you are, you want at least 7 evocation. You can train 14, at a higher level

Lore wise, I use 10, and use every single lore point. You may want to reduce that, because I use alot more spells than the regular mage, like Fear, Confusion, Paralyze, etc. So only train lore to the point where you really need it. Some spells may sound neat, but if you really dont need it, dont train it.

Life wise, 10 is a really good level to have it at. Mine's less than 10, mainly because I dont group much unless for fun, and I can keep my resist on easy. 10 Life also helps when grouping, because some people wont group with me because my resists dont last for 10 minutes. But I'm more built for soloing, I can keep monsters away from me easily.

Enchantment isnt too important, I dont reccomend training it at all. Especially if your a halfing or pixie, you have plenty of mana. Neither is incantation, I heal fine, and you should heal fine with all your mana, you wont lose much.

Okay for your elements, if your going 2 major ones, you want 25 of both at HoF. This is the best advice I can give you when training them, but some people dont do it, just my and some others opinions.
Dont train fire and water, or whatever elements your using to your level untill you can reach the next 5 level limit to give you another ball when you cast. Its really not worth it. THe main power boost comes when you get another ball to cast completly. But this is just a opinion shared with a few, and I didnt train 25 fire untill I was at 25. So I kept some of my offense spells at 20 untill then. (Except mind, theres no ball spells)

If your going pixie, like I said, to be good your going to need the right equipment for 25 of both. I based most of this off halfing or human, but it wont be too differnt for pixie, since thats probaly what you want to go since your that pixie finatic.
And even though I really dont like you fLangel, this is truthfull advice. Take it if you want.

take equal parts meditation and snobbishness, blend for five hours while slowly adding fire, lore, life, evocation, and ignorance.

at that point you may or may not want to add some fortified bum wine and some needlessly expensive yet weak liquor and mix em all up in a big jar.

and you have a "mage"

Just to add on to Bullfrogz...
Spirit Magic- train and get 7 for mana shield, because it will be a life saver.
Evo - yea, either 7 or 14 the steps in between feel like a waste to me
Life - unless you want to group a lot, 3 life will do
Fire/water - you can keep this few levels behind you and add up with magical items
meditation - i would say 20+, because it saves you training other arts and you basically have to rely on this skill in rds (no matter how much you have, still bring an elixir or 2)
strength - 3, depending on what items you use and how greedy you are
lore - really depends on what you plan to do, but round 5,6 will do..

I wouldnt train strength. Just learn the spell, and if your really need to use rings of greater strength (I forget the real name, but they give you 3 each).
Even if you do get weighed down, just use remove curse, identify, and sell. Theres shops in Rd's and close to many training spots. And theres always recall

Yes there are rings of giant strength, but there are other rings that give - strength also If you are a pixie, you will appriciate carrying more than 3 spellbooks.

Be level 28 and have insane quest items
Put 5 points in Whips, 10 in fire, water, and air. 7 in spirit, 3 in earth, 15 in life. 7 in lore, Spirit Traveling is a priority also. Heres the main thing have tons of meditation, enough that people say, "Dorion you're an idiot" I recommend 20+ trained.

Enjoy being the invincible bunny.

Here is the trick to being a really good mage. Forget all other skills and train oratory.

Then act annoying and the world will truly fear you!!!!!

I havent read many of the replies....but as for the meditation, I usually train 9....that way with the guild bonus you'll get a nice multiple of five regenerated every few seconds.....I just like regaining sp in multiples of five......not only that but if your gonna use a lot of fireballs/blizzards, a lot of meditation and evocation helps....but it all depends on which race you choose....go halfling...the 4 points a level really helps on your first mage....

I stumbled on an interesting site which dedicates itself to mages. I wasn't going to say anything because I didn't think the person was working on it and it was kind of bare. As it just sat there for a few days, but then I looked at it today and was impressed with the update.

www.freewebs.com/archmagi/

If whoever created this site reads this, nice job. I hope you finish soon and all congrats to you!

I didn't know what you were talking about at first, but I figured it out.

It says he/she hopes too, I think.

I found the site because someone PMed me asking for my Skill Set. I refused to give it and he/she gave me the link. I told him I'd think about it. He/she might send you something, I guess.
