I agree with Tanm. With the guild being on a small island, it would be safer to defend against raiding orcs, whatever. The guild would probably get small tax from the merchants of the town, for the guilds protection, and also from all the travelers staying in the town while they trained.
As far away as it is from the capitol, less hassle from the rulers, more power for the guild masters. What Salky was saying about the "Guild Wants You", whose to say that the trainers in the other cities do not inform the Mages Guilds about promising young spell casters, that they have aided.
Trying to stay away from QI, when Samhoc is completed, some person informs the mage guild that you passed the test, when you give him somethin. Its about what Raistlin had to go through, to join his guild,if you think about it.
And Fae still have to be a small city, not enough area for a big population.

Hmm, if Salkand goes astral traveling, can I cut the silver cord attaching him to NVA?

Different types of magic should be in different areas.... Most of the times there are 2 realms of magic. Evil (aka blood/death) and Good (aka life) it really makes littel sense to put the trainers to the two next to each other. Evl magic tends to hide and lurk in the shadows, while Good magic rests in towns and has large quilds based in town.

Well, perhaps its this. Lemme break down another, more explained reason of why it is considered evil.

Lets start with the word its self. Necromancy. It means Death magic or magic to do with death, roughly(Necro=Death. Mancy=magic. Close enough.).
Now, Inherently, Magic to do with Death is not really evil, but you have to admit, its dark. Now, aside from the reason that alot of people assocaite darkness with evil, its also the way Necromancers act. You see, Necromancers will often do bad things to get their "Raw materials" for experiments. Example: Digging up a corpse/skeleton. Killing someone for their corpse. Killing someone for their corpse to use simply as a reagent for an experiment.
Now, Aside from that, its Death magic, and therefore, one of its sides is: Killing people. A magic thats pretty much devoted to killing people and doing things with corpses is considered creepy, and bringing us back to what KoD said, people consider it unnatural.
Then again, really, Life magic and Death magic have two very similar sides, that go about accomplishing things in diffrent ways.
Now, thats really why people consider it evil. And just leave it at that. .

I believe, (Arilou, please correct me if I am wrong) that in the fantasy realms we are disscussing, one becomes aligned with one magic realm or another by ones action, apliucations, and use of that magic. the two types are not compatiable. I could be wrong......

However, in your above scenario Logwad that would be an application of life magic. Using the magic for good. If it was an application of death magic you would use your magic to animate all the corpses and have them fight for you (Which would be evil). Because all your little spell would do would prevent friendlies from dieng untill after the war was won, not creating an army of undead. Teh more you become aligned, the more powerful the spells become. At one end of the spectrum is the ability to summon deamons, and teh kill instantly (aka death ray) at the other end is healing and powerful protection spells.

...... That statement..... I don't even have words for it.

They are two diffrent schools of magic, what you do with it does NOT denote what kind of magic you are using. You can ressurrect people with death magic, but you get a diffrent result than with life magic, as I said above "Life magic and Death magic have two very similar sides, that go about accomplishing things in diffrent ways." Sure, what you are saying could be considered partially right, but you cover up that part with alot of phoey.

Zeofar you are correct sorta.... the base magic is identica but the way you use it and the applications thereof changes it into one or the other, thus the different types.
