Default Wyvern and LOTR

I've been reading the books and...well, Wyvern seems...to...err...excersise Tolkien's ideas.

White Handed Shields
Red Eye Shields

Those were shields of the goblin and orcs of different legions...So...

Halflings

Let's not start.

Yeah, I was like..."". Did Legoloas design those items or what?

Actually they are called hobbits, but Tolkien has a hold over that word.

Wyvern draws inspiration from d&d and d&d does the same from Lord of the Rings and many other great works on fiction and mythology.

But was the White Hand Shields and the Red Eye ones necessary?

Might as well create a race of tree giants and call them Erts.

Ents not Erts. And Ents can be found in many other popular fanatasy books/movies/games its not just a LOTR race.

Fantasy is a mixture of ideas from different sources throughout history and in modern times - Tolkien, himself, borrowed heavily from mythology and as such I've seen foolish people claim one art form stole an idea from Tolkien when in reality that idea wasn't even originally his. Such is the way of creativity in human beings - We borrow, we share, we are inspired by, and we improve upon.

More so Wyvern is inspired by a number of other games and as such you will see similarities between fantasy worlds. This is something common to all games and if you take the time to do your homework you'll see that d&d has dozens of items inspired by weapons and such that were written about by Tolkien. So if this really bothers you I'd suggest writing a letter to Wizard's of the Coast and complain about the source material they've been using for over 30 years now.

Oh, so now you're saying Magic steals ideas?

All right, I'll back off. But still...the White Handed Shields and Red Eye ones are the things that get me the most. Explain that.

And Rakth, I know that.

As you can see it's a nethack item and if you go here [url:908c6]http://www.cabochon.com/influences.html[/url:908c6] you will see some things rhialto wrote about the subject. Particularly this:

[quote:908c6]
You won't find a game on any platform that hasn't borrowed extensively from other games. Crossfire borrowed from Gauntlet, Ultima and Nethack. Nethack borrowed from Hack, Rogue and Moria. Muds borrowed from Zork, and from each other. And all of them would be nowhere if it weren't for Dungeons and Dragons, which most people don't realize took many of its ideas from older games like Greyhawk, Chainmail and Arduin Grimoire. It goes back as far as you can trace. In fact, give me any commercial game and I'll tell you who their influences were too. The important thing is that each new game brings a new set of exciting features to the players.
[/quote:908c6]

Beyond that you are going to have to do your own research as this is really nonsense on your part. The world would be an extremely dull place if every idea no matter how small was copyrighted, and you can't seem to grasp that concept.

Try reading, (yes reading) Norse mythology you see that even Tolkien was inspired there are lots of simularities. But nontheless it makes an original great book.
