Suggestions Post any suggestions for new Wyvern content here that is too complicated to explain in the idea log or that you want to first get feedback on from other players.

Default Ability to store items.

Basic Idea: Put items in a container that only your player can access (or a wizard, of course) and leave them there through server resets or whenever you feel to remove them.

I got this idea while reading the player guide, but more specifically, the FaQ's. The second question states, "Is there a place I can store things?", the response is, "Nope. Wyvern no longer has bank vaults or storage lockers," and the justification is, "They were removed because they were causing game-balancing problems. People would hoard everything they found, and everyone suddenly had too much stuff. Players were giving away hundreds of fancy items to other players, and nobody actually had to work for anything anymore. Now we only let you save what you can carry. You can, however, use ATM machines in banks to deposit your gold coins between sessions."

The difference between my idea, and the old "vault" system is set a restriction on either how much weight the object can hold, or how many items. This idea could be made more interesting by making it an object, such as a special Bag of Great Holding that is more costly and either removes all of the weight from the objects, or removes a large majority of the weight. This way players cannot just hoard everything of significant value and save it for later or transfer it to other players.

A combination of an item restriction and weight restriction could help balance the item or vault. Such as a bag or vault that can only hold five items, as long as they don't add up to be greater than 25 or 50ibs. Seeing as how Black DSM's are less valueable than something such as fancy white gloves of agility +10.

In my opinion, this would only be useful for mages, or other characters who don't train too high in strength, but could still be used by all players if they would like. Considering that 25-50ibs probably won't affect a level 20 stone giant or anyone that's 7th level in the caveman's guild, but it could still be used to carry around some auction items in.

Any thoughts on this?

The thing you will need to address is this:
When vaults were removed players inventory slots were hugely increased to 80 items (extremely high number for RP purposes), you add bags of greater holding to that and players can carry more items in their inventory than we would ever allow in a vault.

So if item vaults were ever considered again (which is probably never going to happen but just for this discussions sake) a players inventory would have to be restricted to 20 or so items if not even less. Which would make looting/dungeon crawling very difficult.

Most suggestions about storage never take into consideration decreasing players inventory significantly, and they must.

The current system lets a player "store" in greater bags of holding, 100s, if not 1000s of items in some cases. This leaves it up to the player what they keep, don't keep , collect, train strength to be able to carry more etc. Leaving it in the players hands and not ours is a better idea/system , their choice, and is what we currently have. This system we have already is combination of an item restriction and weight restriction based completely on players choice.
If you want to carry more, train more strength, pick a different race, choose different items etc. This is exactly one of the things that balances mages/choice to not train strength for loot carrying.

So ultimately, removing the balancing issues, there is only one reason for a vault and that is to protect high value items from thief monsters and those high value items are exactly what you list as what we would restrict.

The choice to train strength or not is exactly that, your choice. We aren't looking to remove the need for a skill just by adding vaults.

So it was removed for the reason listed and won't be put back for that same reason among 1000 other reasons that weren't listed that have been discussed at length in the 10 years since they were removed.

That makes sense.
I wasn't around in the early ages when there were restrictions on how many items a player could carry.

Yeah it was increased to 50 when vaults were removed and then it was increased to 80 in '03.
