You don't really need merchant yet, as the best use for it is to sell magical items at above 1000 gold pieces, which you won't be finding for a while. 1 merchant at level 4 for 5000 isn't going to be worth it. Merchant also shaves off some of the cost for buying items, but at a low level you don't have that much you need to buy. The 5000 is better used to put into your fighting skills for now, but once you start finding items with enchantments, or goodies like suck-o-matics, you might want some merchant.
Now, for level 4, a good way to make money is killing orcs, goblins, and kobolds. From the goblins and kobolds, the only thing worth much is the tiny shields, so you can just drop the (usually cursed) orcish stone axes and knives. The orcs items are usually worth their weight, so you can hold on to them. Orcs can be a little difficult at level 4 since they tend to swarm and love using their bows, so you might like to stay with kobolds and goblins for a little. A trick I've heard of players using is buying a potion of invisibility, which solves the problem of fighting too many orcs at once; orcs can't see invisible players, so you can whack at them with near impunity. I've never used such a technique at a low level, so I can't speak to its cost effectives or actual usefulness.
Also, the early parts of the Oxbow snake pit have a lot of stones which sometimes actually sell for quite a bit, but that area can be quite dangerous sometimes. I've never been too good a money maker, so that is all I can really think of at the moment.
Well, I hope that helps!

I disagree, you get a %bonus for all loot with merchant, not just items for more then 1000. Get 5 merchant as fast as you can. My advice is to go to the goblin ruins near davos, collect all the loot, repair it all and sell it, you will make quick and easy cash, enough to buy merchant, which makes you more cash, so you get a better and better cash flow with each point.

(If this doesn't make sense, I'm sorry, just got of work and kinda tired, I'll explain it better if you need me to)
