Nothing particularly new. There always seems to be some twit who gets caught.

This is a very crooked injury. I understand that pirating music is illegal, but these fines are out of control. I don't see how $675,000 is charged for someone downloading 30 songs, which would probably just cost $30.

And Anatil, the RIAA is not to be messed with.

Considering I download mostly foreign music I doubt RIAA could do anything >_>

The few american songs I've downloaded I lost interest in and deleted ages ago.

Well, it's not REALLY 30 songs. Remember that they put Al Capone away for tax evasion, and he was certainly guilty of much more than that. If you read a little further down the article, the defendant admitted in court that he downloaded and shared over 800 songs over an 8 year period.

The 30 is just what law enforcement could conclusively prove from monitoring him. Then, that these 30 were examples of a much broader offense was argued in court, and the fines were laid out accordingly.

That is probably still not the whole truth to it, it might also have something to do with him having had the files as 'shared' in whatever program he was using. They are estimating the loss in sales from other people who uploaded the file from him as well, but the trial itself is serving more of a symbolic purpose.

There isn't really a need to download a digital copy anymore, sites such Pandora, Spotify and last.fm allow the users to stream pretty much every track released, including obscure stuff.

I don't really understand why people would want to waste time downloading music, formatting to a file type your player supports and then transferring the files across to what ever player you are using.

I would rather get the Spotify app on my Iphone/computer, search for an artist, hit play. It also caches music so I can listen to it offline.

I know which option I will be using.

I don't think Spotify is available in the USA yet, but they've got licensing in most of Europe so I'm sure they'll make the hop across the pond soon.

Two things.
1) I'm glad I live in a country where downloading music is not a crime. No, it's not Afghanistan, it's in the middle of Yurop. (sharing is of course still illegal)
2) I will support Czech pirate party in upcoming votes in autumn. They think sharing should still be illegal (even though the punishment should be much smaller if done for no commercial purpose), but they want the fines to make sense (max 10*common price of the stuff you shared) - todays situation when antipiracy corporations make up the fees with no rationalisation is just ridiculous.

Sorry if you had problems understanding, I'm not a native english speaker.

Isn't that basically the same as downloading?
